Histological and Histochemical Studies on the Renal Glomeruli of the Streptozotocin- induced Diabetic Rats

Abstract
This experiment was carried out to evaluate the fasting serum glucose level, renal function, and histological and histochemical changes of renal glomeruli in the streptozotocin- induced diabetic rats.
The results were as follows.
l. Persistent and marked hyperglycemia was maintained after one day of the administration of streptozotocin.
2. Blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and serum creatinine levels were somewhat increased from one week to the end period of this experiment after administration of streptozotocin.
3. Within one month after streptozotocin administration, morphological change was not evident. It was, however, after one month of streptozotocin administration that the focal degeneration and necrosis in the renal glomeruli, thickening of the basement membrane of glomerular capillaries, and proliferation of reticular and collagenous fibers in the Bowman¢¥s capsule and renal glomeruli were exhibited. Increase of PAS-positive materials was also noted in the glomerular mesangium. All the streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats showed the above mentioned histological and histochemical changes which were gradually marked with elapse of time. These morphological changes were not agreeable to the previous other reports in the time of morphological alterations.
